Visitors

The visitors series is an essential element of our graduate program in creative writing. We try to bring in a half dozen or more writers every year to provide our students with a broader exposure to the current literary community.

Our Visiting Writers Program

Visiting Writers 2004-2008

The Center has an extensive Visiting Writers Series that will bring in 6 to 8 writers for short, intensive stays during the 2004-2005 academic year. These visitors conduct workshops, meet in private conferences with our students, give readings and lectures, do panel discussions on topics of special interest (publishing, for example), and work with the students in a variety of ways to help them improve their work. Our most recent visitors include Lucie Brock-Broido, Stephen Dobyns, Kelly Cherry, Percival Everett, Tim O'Brien, Francine Prose, Elissa Schappell, Matthew Sharpe, Rob Spillman, Dara Weir, James Tate, Dave Smith, Amy Hempel.

It is essential for students to meet and interact with, to hear, to have their fiction and poetry workshopped by a variety of practicing writers, and so we have had, for the last two decades, one of the finest visiting writers programs in the nation. While the series is a little erratic (as what is not these days?) we are pleased to have sponsored this slightly erratic series of visiting writers, recently including, recently, Rick Moody, Julia Slavin, Dana Gioia, Mary Gaitskill, Frank Bidart, Antonya Nelson, Joy Williams, Padgett Powell, Ellen Douglas, Tom Drury, Thom Jones, W.D. Snodgrass, Francine Prose and others.

The Incomplete List of Visitors

We are working up the full list, but below is a partial list of visitors. The list goes way back. We are not trying to give you the impression that all these people appeared in the last couple of weeks. It is, nonetheless, an interesting and worthy list that gives you some idea of our program's interests.
